Farewell, Falcons!

Hi Falcons!

As you may have guessed, I've retired from my job as a dorm life blogger.

I graduated from Bowling Green State University about a month ago and have since landed a full-time job as a reporter for The Sandusky Register in Sandusky, Ohio.

I'll leave this blog online for your records, but it will no longer be updated.

Regardless, hopefully it will continue to help fellow Falcons conquer dorm life at BGSU!

Roll along!

Crunching numbers...

Take a deep breath. Inhale. Exhale.

... it's over.

Congratulations! You survived this semester's finals week. You've moved all of your dorm d├ęcor back home, spent the last of your meal plan and sold back all of your books for a fraction of what you paid for them. And now, as you're waiting for your instructors to post your final grades, what can you do to pass the time and ease your anxiety?

Why don't you try to estimate your final grades before your teacher posts them?

As a grade nerd, I can't stand waiting for my instructors to post my scores. In a world of constant updating, I find the process daunting and nerve-wracking. When teachers make tests and assignments worth different percentages of your total grade, it can be difficult to estimate your progress in class. Luckily, technology is here to help.

ConquerCollege.com offers a very handy grade calculator that crunches the numbers for you. Click HERE to access it.

Once you're on the site, type in your scores for each assignment and what percentage each assignment is toward your total grade. When only one grade is missing, the calculator will tell you what you needed to score on your final to get an A, B, C, etc., in the class. Sometimes, your minimal score will be very low, which can really help ease your nerves while awaiting that elusive final grade posting. (A sample form is available on the site if you need help.)

Final grades for Bowling Green State University students will be posted by Wednesday, so hopefully you can wait until then.

Good luck, and enjoy your winter break! :)

If a pet is what you wish...

Have you ever wondered what the Bowling Green State University's official policies are concerning keeping a pet on campus?

Reporter Dominic Binkley outlined the policy quite nicely in this weekend's print edition of The BG News. You can read it here.

The policy can be summed up easily by a simple slogan. In the words of my resident advisers from freshman and sophomore year -- "If a pet is what you wish, then it must be a fish."

Safe rooms available in BGSU residence halls for emergencies

If you're confronted with a scary situation while living on BGSU's campus, did you know there's a safe place you can go?

A few "safe rooms" are located within on-campus housing for situations including stalking, intense roommate disagreements and broken windows.

Typically the empty rooms are rented out to a student for one night while BGSU's Office of Residence Life handles the problem. Safe rooms cannot be requested, but are given to students if an appropriate situation presents itself.

Assistant Pulse editor Danae King wrote an excellent story about safe rooms in Wednesday and Thursday's print edition of The BG News. You can (and should) read it HERE.

As The BG News' reporters continue to write about Residence Life subjects this semester, I'll continue to post their work here. I think it will be very helpful for on-campus students, and I always love to give my co-workers a shameless plug!

Personally, I think it's very assuring to know Residence Life has a plan in place in case an on-campus student is presented with an emergency situation.

Students, educate yourself about your options -- and nice job Residence Life!

... It's about time

Hey residential warriors, I'm back!

I hope you're doing well. It's been a while since I've posted here. As much as I hate to admit it, the timestamps tell no lies.

This semester has been hectic -- there's no denying that. My responsibilities are slowly piling up, and between moving into my Enclave 2 apartment, taking classes, applying for internships, writing freelance stories and being managing editor at The BG News -- not to mention finding time to eat and sleep -- I'm reminded daily how important time management is. In actuality, college never looks like the class schedule you printed on paper.

So how are you doing? I'm assuming you're quite busy, too.

As fall break draws near, midterms are quickly creeping up. To assist you in managing your time better, I created an interactive map of my favorite study hot spots at Bowling Green State University. Click on a spot and read about it!

View Study Hot Spots in a larger map

So if you're in the mood to venture out of your dorm or apartment and study at a different location on campus, I encourage you to try one of these spots.

Finding a place to study is half the battle. A nurturing environment, free of noise and distractions, can help make studying for midterms much more productive.

I can't help you with the second half of the battle, however -- you'll have to find the motivation to actually start studying on your own! ;)

Good luck on your midterms!
